BALANCE YOUR CREATIVE & BUSINESS SIDES: 5 TIPS FOR PROMOTING YOUR MUSIC ONLINE

Today’s musician is balancing work, family and a love to make music that they want the world to hear. Adding online promoting to that list can be intimidating. With nearly 1.8 billion internet users, you can connect to the world with the click of a button, but keep this in mind:

• IT’S NOT ABOUT HAVING THE MOST ONLINE “FRIENDS”
Sure the more “followers” and “friends” you have online does have a correlation with popularity but your main goal should be to build relationships. Build trust and entertain your audience. Having 10,000 followers means nothing if they aren’t listening to your messages. Would your online friends purchase your music, go to your shows or recommend your music to their own circle?

• NETWORK & COMMUNICATE
Social networking has allowed you to personally connect to potential buyers and fans. You can see and build a database of people who want to connect with you. Become more accessible using sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube so fans to get to know you. Talk back and respond to comments. Keep in mind, onlookers and random people are able to anonymously check out what you’ve been up to, so show them!

• CREATE A DEMAND
You can send out thousands of emails, tweets, and posts with your new music and it won’t help if it falls on deaf ears. If the consumer is not open to hear your message, they treat your message as unwanted “Spam”. It’s up to your marketing and music to get people wanting to hear from you.

• CONSISTENT UPDATES
Have you been to someone’s webpage, Facebook or Twitter account that hasn’t been updated in months or years? Keeping up with the latest technology, responding to emails and updating your web pages are a full-time job itself. Surround yourself with web knowledge so you can keep the fans entertained on a consistant basis.

• BALANCE YOUR CREATIVE AND BUSINESS SIDES

Get creative with your promotions. There are more online outlets and listeners to hear to your music to than ever before. More giveaways, more videos, more music and more insight into your life give fans incentives push the “Like” button or “Retweet” you. Have merchandise ready to sell on your website if you plan on giving away your music. Have a goal, know your market and have fun with posting.
